The TIS Information Team collects information about further, higher, postgraduate and professional education. Our courses database holds information on over 120,000 courses at more than 1,000 universities and colleges in the UK and Ireland. In addition to detailed course profiles, we also collect a range of information about the course-providing institutions, their facilities and contact details.

We maintain regular contact with colleagues at the institutions throughout the year, as well as conducting a major data collection process each year for postgraduate, undergraduate and further education courses. The majority of information is provided directly by the institutions via an online updating system. Our contacts at universities and colleges, who include staff in Admissions, Student Recruitment and Marketing departments, are able to access the system all year round, so that updates can be made as and when they are required. At many universities, the updates come directly from the individual Schools or Departments.

Once the course information has been submitted to the online updating system, it goes through a rigorous checking process prior to publication. Each change that is made online is checked by a member of the Information Team, edited wherever necessary to conform to our editorial standards and formatted as appropriate in line with client specifications. The information then undergoes a second check as part of the quality assurance process.

We have advanced database and web systems for the collection of all types of information. These are hosted on secure servers and developed and managed by a team of IT professionals.

The data collection service is free to all course providing institutions. By providing course information to a number of partners for publication, we aim to reduce the number of requests for information received by busy admissions and marketing departments. We supply information to a variety of sources, including Course Discover, the Green Guides, the Postgraduate Courses series and the Directory of University and College Entry (DUCE). We also supply information for a number of Hobsons Publishing's electronic and print publications, including the Postgrad and Springboard websites and Which Degree directories. In addition to the information collected via the online updating system, we also conduct research and data collection for specific publications. This has included information about services and admissions procedures for mature students, detailed information about entry routes into particular careers, and professional body information.

We are in the process of extending the level of service available to course providing institutions, this currently includes the co-ordination of internal information collection, the provision of information back to institutions and the management and hosting of course search functionality.
